Report on Anti/Chhaupadi Campaign, Gender, Inclusion and Women Empowerment

FYI: I was invited by Sarbodaya Nepal, I do not take a single penny. They took care of my food, accommodation and transport when I was in Jumla.

Overall Summary:
In order to empower rural women, the series of discussion meetings (Review and Reflection) is conducted in various villages of Jumla districts; Dillichaur for Dillichaur and Patrashi, Lamra for Lamra,Hanku and Talium and Kudari for Kudari and Tatopani. The gender facilitators, Female Community Health Workers,Men chapions and NGOs leaders; Sarbodaya Nepal, Action Works Nepal, BEE Group and CAD were presented as their respective work. All sessions lead by Ms. Radha Paudel, Former, Founder /President of Action Works Nepal and Founder of Radha Paudel Foundation and co- facilitated by Kamal Khatri from Sarbodaya, Jumla.  The discussion meeting in Kudari was new group. Rest of the group started to engage with these activities and trainer since December 2013. It was fifth sessions with them though in Dillichaur site, the participants were new. In overall, the men members and faith healers were less who were important group to engage to for women empowerment, chhaupadi and all forms of GBV free community. However, these sessions were so productive and result oriented. The participants were taking their leadership, owned the issues and expand their horizon in terms of knowledge and skills. They are still in need to follow up, coaching and linkages with district networks and institutions. The district level activities cancelled due to illness of principle trainer. The program started from Dillichaur and ended in Kudari dated on Nov 27, to December 3, 2016 respectively. For details, please follow the below matrix.

Key Outcomes of the Discussion Meetings:
1.       Built confidence among the participants
2.       Increased the Chhaupadi free families and communities in all working villages
3.       Increased awareness on basic concepts of gender, inclusion, GBV, 16 days VAW and few legal perspectives
4.       Expanded the networking and coordination among local actors and also mild type of linkage developed with district network
5.       Enhanced leadership skills in mobilization of communities and community events e.g. Chhaupadi free community, marched of 16 days VAW activism
6.       Improved the knowledge and skills on combating violence against girls and women
7.       Increased the number of men, women and faith healers as champions
8.       Recognised as local leaders by other stakeholders

·   Recognized by the Village secretary and other organization as leaders e.g. allocated the VDC budget and use for skill based training
·   Addressed GBV cases locally as well as referred to district
· For such review meeting the number of new members should reduce, 12 new members with old fashioned, so very hard to lead the discussion.
· The engagement of boys and men should expand, there was only one male member in the discussion and the gender facilitators reported that only faith healer's family have resist against campaign of Anti Chhaupadi.

· Organize cross learning visit for the participants of Lamra, Haku, Talium and Tatopani in Dhimkot Kudari
· Marched the rally on 16 days VAW Activism from Lamra to Dhimkot, Kudari
· Reviewed the exposure visit and concluded with way forward
· Reviewed the roles of gender facilitators, challenges and way forward
· Visited Hiyakhola group and made interaction on declaration of Chhaupadi free community

· Discussed on basic concepts such as gender, sex, inclusion, GBV, Sexual abuse, Chhaupadi, menstruation with the participants from Kudari and Tatopani village including the representative from AWON and CAD.
· Marched 16 days VAW from Kudari Bazar to Rawat wada and organized an interaction program with group members
· Observed the Karnali food Industry
· Reviewed the roles and responsibilities of Gender Facilitators

· The involvement of district network in such discussion meeting should encouraged
