Menstrual Discrimination among children belong with Himalayan Region, Nepal

 Had an interaction program with students who are living in orphan home in Kathmandu valley in 9 April 2022.

There were total 63 students where 25 were boys. They are more than 10 years and above because few girls may have menstruation even at age 9 or 10 years therefore invited such young as during interaction. Mostly, they belong with Himalaya region and Janjatis (indigenous group). Before started the interaction, the basic questions asked to assess their knowledge around menstruation. They expressed their opinions and practices through writing. Total 42 students knew something about menstruation whereas 21 were did not know anything about menstruation. Among them who knew something, they knew or heard about it between the age of 5 to 12 years (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12). Among those who know about menstruation, they learned from book, teacher, sister, neighbor, school mate, and picture, mother washing clothes, class mates, and movie.  Almost of them did not know the exact definition of the menstruation. They have deep feeling of menstrual blood is dirty, matter of silence, girl’s issue and gross ignorance.

The diverse reactions experienced by them while they know or saw something about menstruation. Feelings-scared, afraid, awful feeling, sick, unhappy, discomfort, shock, strange to play with boys, pain, ashamed, avoid sports, surprised, dangerous, secrete, no idea (emptiness), very danger, terrified, shy, hiding, teasing, sad, awful feeling, unsecure, afraid, hate by others and myself, worry, insult, tease by brother in law. The few girls experienced physical symptoms before and during menstruation such as pain, discomfort.
