Menstrual Discrimination: School Health Nurse Program

                Nurses experienced/practicing following restrictions during menstruation. They worked in schools as School Health Nurse in Kavre, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Chitwan, Nuwakot and belong with Newar, Bramin, Tamang. 

  • Silence 
  • Ignorance 
  • Shyness 
  • Not allowed to participate in ritual and social function.
  • Not allowed to enter in the kitchen, worship room, temple, and religious places.
  • Restricted to touch plants, fruits, vegetables.
  • Not allowed to touch senior citizens or any male.
  • Have to stay in neighbor house during menstruation or have to stay in separate room in own house.
  • Have to stay alone and eat alone.
  • Mothers are not allowed to breast feeding.
  • Didn’t get enough nutritious food and water.
  • Are not allowed to have dairy products and fruits.
  • After the 4 days of menstruation, have to purify our self with gold water and then we are allowed to do normal activities as normal day.
  • Have to use separate clothes and separate blanket during menstruation.
  • Are not allowed to touch tap and use toilet as normal days.
  • Are not allowed to do household works as normal days.
  • Are not allowed to discuss openly about menstruation.


Issues in schools related to menstrual discrimination

1.     Lack of menstrual pad.

2.     Lack of sanitation facilities

3.     Lack of menstrual pad disposable facilities.

4.     Students feel ashamed to ask for menstrual pad with teachers in school.

5.     Feeling of shyness to talk about menstruation or ask for help during menstruation due to lack of menstrual education.

6.     Lack of gender oriented rest rooms.

7.     Lack of waste management.

8.     Supply of low quality of menstrual pad.

9.     Lack of separated room to rest during menstruation if they feel uneasy during menstruation.

10.  Lack of dignified menstruation friendly environment.

11.  Use the same pad for a long time.

12.  Poor Personal hygiene.

Problems face during menstruation

4. Excessive Bleeding

Practices seen related to menstruation in Kavre

1.      Excessive Bleeding/Heavy bleeding.

2.      Could not talk with parents about menstruation openly.

3.      Poor drinking water, poor sanitation facilities.

4.      Health issues like abdominal pain, epigastric problems, fainting, back pain &headache.

5.      Poor menstrual waste management

6.      Gender based violence.

7.      Ashamed to talk about menstruation.

8.      High number of absence of female students due to menstruation.

9.      Lack of education on personal hygiene maintenance, environmental sanitation.

10.  Use the same menstrual pad for long time.

11.  Poor personal hygiene.

12.  Continuously eating junk food.

13.  Irregular menstruation.

1.      Hesitate to talk about menstruation.

2.      Irregular menstruation due to hormonal change.

3.      There is belief that menstruation is topic of females.

1.      Improper disposal of menstrual pad

2.      Feel ashamed to ask for menstrual pad

3.      Feel ashamed to discuss on menstruation

4.      Supply of low quality of menstrual pads.

Menstrual Discrimination in different culture

1.      Not allowed to enter in kitchen & prepare food (Dhading, Kavre, Chitwan, Nuwakot, Bhaktapur belong with Bhramins, Chhetri, Ghale, Gurung ,Newar)

2.      Not allowed to worship god & goddess. Not allowed to enter the temple ( Dhading, Chitwan, Sunsari, Kavre, Lalitpur, Bharatpur, Nuwakot belong with Newar, Chaudhary, Rai, Tamang , Ghale, Bhramins, Chhetri)

3.      Not allowed to touch brother, father or any male member of family (Dhading, Kavre, Chitwan belong with Bhramins, Chhetri, )

4.      Not allowed to do household works. (Kavre, Dhading, Chitwan, Nuwakot, Bhaktapur)  belong with Bhramins, Chhetri,

5.      Not allowed to participate in social gathering or ritual activities. (Nuwakot, Kavre, Dhading, Chitwan belong with Chapagai, Chhetri, Bhramins, Newar)

6.      Purify after the 4 day of menstruation with gold water (Nuwakot, Chitwan, Bhaktpur, Kavre, Dhading belong with Tamang, Rai, Newar, Bhramins, Chhetri)

7.      Use of separate clothes and blanket during menstruation. (Kavre, Dhading, Chitwan, Nuwakot, Bhaktapur belong with Newar, Tamang, Ghale, Bhramins, Chhetri)

8.      Not allowed to sit together, eat together (Kavre, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Sunsari belong with Newar, Rai, Tamang, Ghale, Bhramins, Chhetri)

9.      Not allowed to touch plants, fruits (Dhading, Kavre, Nuwakot belong with Bhramins, Chhetri, Ghale, Tamang)
