 This is the discussion on dignified menstruation in School, Kathmandu as a part of CSE, invited by Ministry of Health and Population.





Class 9

1)Yukesh Neupane / Jhapa

·       My mother doesn’t touch religious items and cold water

·       Eat a little amount of chocolate

·       Celebrate first menstruation as a festival

·       She takes pads with her

·       Doesn’t cook food

 

2)Pratik Some / Kathmandu

·       My mother stays separately without entering the kitchen and puja kotha (separate room at home to worship gods)

·       Do not perform religious activities.

 

3)Samragyi Panta / Kathmandu

·       Do not touch male family members and religious book

·       Do not enter the kitchen

·       Do not visit temples and worship gods

·       Do not eat prasad (foods worshiped to gods)

·       Do not put tika (red powder used as a symbol of blessing)

·       Sleep on the floor

·       Wash and keep the utensils used by menstruators separately

·       On the 4th day of menstruation, bathe early and wash the bed sheets

 

4)Nitisha Lamichhane / Kathmandu

·       Not allowed to touch fermented food jars and tulsi plant (plant with religious value, holy basil)

·       Not allowed to enter and work in the kitchen

·       Do not worship God

 

5)Max Shrestha / Kathmandu

·       Get angry easily

 

6)Prathna Kaliraj / Kathmandu

·       Do not touch men and elderly at home

·       Do not enter puja kotha and kitchen

·       Drink hot water

·       Avoid spending too much time outside

·       Rest well


 

7)Aarushi Karn / Kathmandu

·       Do not touch aachar (pickles, fermented food)

·       Prohibited from entering puja kotha.

·       Take rest

 

8)Shriwani Shakya / Kathmandu

·       Prohibited from entering puja kotha

·       Avoid activities like receiving tika and others associated with worshipping God.

·       Don’t consume spicy food.

·       Consume healthy foods.

·       Drink an adequate amount of water.

·       Maintaining personal hygiene more than usual.

 

9)Samriddhi Lamichhane / Kathmandu

·       Do not touch men

·       Do not enter into kitchen

·       Do not enter grandfather’s home

·       Do not perform puja

·       Put the used utensils separately during menstruation

 

10)Kaushar Ansari / Janakpur

·       Availability of pads

 

11)Khushi Dhimal / Kathmandu

·       Not allowed to take touched utensils inside the kitchen

·       Not allowed to touch plants and any other items used for worshiping gods

·       To stay in only one place and not allow to touch anything around

·       Not allowed to enter the kitchen or the temple

·       Not allowed to worship god/goddess

12)Mimisha Baral / Kathmandu

·       Not allowed to touch elderly peoples

·       Have to put the used utensils separately

·       Have to stay in same room, sleep in same place for five days and wash all the clothes that have been touched

·       Not allowed to enter the kitchen or temple

·       Not allowed to eat the food given by someone who is menstruating

·       Have to wear same clothes for four days

·       Not allowed to celebrate any festival

13)Nidipa Karki / Morang

·       Not allowed to enter the kitchen or worship god

·       Have to eat sweet food

·       Not allowed to wear tika (red powder used as a symbol of blessing)

·       Have to use hot bag and drink lots of warm water

·       Having lots of mood swings

1Krish Shrestha / Kathmandu

·       Not allowed to do puja (worshiping gods)

·       Using pad

·       Having bad temper

·       Feeling sleepy, not having energy

15)Biki Yadav / sarlahi

·       Do not touch religious books

·       Not allowed to visit temple and worship gods

·       Do not give the foods you touched to others during menstruation

·       Bathing for six days daily in the morning

16)Saphal Pariyar / Accham

·       Avoiding worshiping gods

·       Using pad

·       Having more sleep then usual

17)Akshat Dhungana / Kathmandu

·       Avoiding worshiping gods

·       Using pad

·       Having more sleep then usual

18)Ujwal Karki / Ramechhap

·       Not allowed to visit temple and worship gods

·       Not allowed to cook food

·       Having bad temper and mild stomach ache

·       Avoiding doing too many tasks

19)Shruti Yadav / Janakpur

·       Not able to touch pickles jars and tulsi pant

·       Not allowed to enter the temple

·       Have to bath after four day of having menstruation

·       Quickly gets angry

·       Do not participate in any kind of puja

21)Sarthak Maan Pradhan

·       Get angry easily

·       Don’t get involved in worship

22)Diya Shrestha / Kathmandu

·       Do not touch cooked food and raw foods

·       Do not worship god and touch any other items used in puja

·       Shower in the 4th day of menstruation

23)Dibish Ramtel / Gairidanda

·       My mother take rest, drinks hot water, and wears clean clothes during menstruation

·       They have to rest during menstruation.

 

24)Subhanjan Khadka / Pokhara

·       Do not to touch flowers

·       Not allowed to enter the kitchen

·       Not allowed to worship gods

·       Self-wash the utensils used during menstruation

 

25)Sushan Magar / Kathmandu

·       Religious activity is not performed

·       My mom sleeps

26)Aamardeep N. Rana / Kathmandu

·       Stay in a separate room

·       Buy pads

·       Get irritated easily

·       Occurrence of mood swings

 

27)Ketehang Limbu / Taplejung

·       My sister doesn’t touch religious items

·       She doesn’t enter the kitchen

·       She gets angry easily and prefers to stay alone

·       She uses pads and make it available to her

·       Not allowed to touch men

·       Not allowed to enter the temple, worship god, put tika

·       Do not cook food

·       Spend most of the time in their own room

 

2)Sneha Yadav / Kathmandu

·       Not allowed to touch tulsi

·       Do not enter the temple and worship god

·       Not allowed to put or receive tika

 

3)Dhriti Bastakoti / Kathmandu

·       Not allowed to enter the temple

·       Not allowed to worship god and put tika

 

4)Ashutosh Parajuli / Kathmandu

·       Do not touch men who have done their bratabandha (holy thread ceremony)

·       Prohibited to touch milk, holy basil

·       Prohibited to enter the kitchen

·       Do not participate in jatra (traditional street festivals in Nepal), enter temple and worship god

·       Prohibited to eat spicy food

·       Not allowed to put or receive tika

·       Do not wash puja materials

 

5)Prashansa Neupane / Kathmandu

·       Not allowed to touch uncle, father and puja materials

·       Not allowed to touch puja materials and worship god

·       Not allowed to enter the kitchen

 

6)Rejina Karki / Sindhupalchowk

·       The food that are touched by menstruators are not allowed to be consumed by others.

·       During menstruation, one should not touch the kitchen and can’t do the kitchen work.

·       When one is prohibited to do puja, then we are convinced that she is menstruating.

7) Aayush Basnet / Kathmandu

·       Prohibited to enter the puja room

8)Tisa Shrestha / Kathmandu

·       They don’t touch things related to puja

·       They don’t do any sort of puja

·       They shower on the 4th day of menstruation

·       They can’t celebrate stuffs like birthday, Dashain, bhai tika (Last day of tihar)

·       Use hot water bags

9)Samanar Shrestha / Kathmandu

·       Not allowed to visit temple

·       Not allowed to go inside the kitchen

·       Avoiding doing any kind of puja

·       Avoiding eating prasad and receiving tika

·       Have to sleep in the bed alone or on the floor

10)Aayush Shrestha / Kathmandu

·       Not able to touch tulsi plant

·       Not allowed to touch men in the household and grandmother

·       Not allowed to enter the kitchen

·       Not allowed to visit temple and receive tika

11)Abhihan Tripathi / Kathmandu

·       Do not touch men who have done their bratabandha

·       Do not enter the kitchen

·       Not allowed to enter the temple and participate during puja rituals

·       Stay in a separate room during menstruation

·       Use different utensil during menstruation and wash it properly before placing it with other utensils

·       Quickly gets angry

12)Biki Kumar Bhagat / Saptari

·       Do not touch men who have done their bratabandha

·       Stay in different room

·       Do not worship god

·       Use different utensils during menstruation

13)Sparsh Giri / Kathmandu

·       Not allowed to enter temple

14)Utkash Shrestha / Kathmandu

·       Prohibited to enter the temple and worship god

15)Adhya Dipak Datta / Kathmandu

·       Prohibited from entering the puja room

·       All things are same as they used to be in other days

16)Rachana Magar / Ilam

·       Prohibited from entering the puja kotha or temple

·       Take shower after 4-5 days or daily during menstruation

·       Don’t have to wake up early in the morning

·       Use hot bag if needed

·       Not allowed to enter kitchen

·       Avoid eating oily food

·       Drink warm water

·       Avoiding heavy work

·       Use of hot bag

19)Kshitiz Chaudhary / Kathmandu

·       Can’t touch milk or any other items used for worshiping god

·       Can’t visit worshiping areas and worship god

·       Restrictions in terms of cooking and other works

·       Going to the washroom often

·       More irritated attitude / ruined mood

20)Aniket Kumar Mahato / Siraha

·       Do not enter the kitchen

·       Do not eat the Prasad (food worship to god)

·       Do not worship god

·       Live alone in a different room

·       Not allowed to put tika during Dashain 

·       Get angry quickly

·       Not allowed to participate in puja (worshiping god)


 

22) Anuj Raut / Okhaldhunga

·       Do not touch the utensils used by them

·       Stay in separate room during menstruation

·       Not allowed to do puja, touch anyone

·       Family god gets angry

23)Simrata Rauniyar / Kathmandu

·       She is not allowed to enter the temple

·       She doesn’t worship god

·       She is not allowed to cook food for first 3 days during menstruation

·       She doesn’t put tika

24)Sakshi Lamichhane / Kathmandu

·       No allowed to touch the men who have done their bratabandha

·       Do not enter the kitchen

·       Do not enter the puja kotha and grandparents’ room

25)Umauma Khan

·       Do not touch holy items

·       Not allowed to study the holy books

·       Mother doesn’t do much work

·       Sister doesn’t each much junk food

·       In the neighborhood the females don’t cook food during menstruation
